Language And Speech Therapy

Speech therapists, also known as speech-language pathologists (SLPs), work with individuals  who may experience difficulties in speaking, articulating sounds, understanding language, or expressing themselves effectively, as well as difficulties with swallowing.

Comprehensive Speech Therapy

Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support, and care for individuals who have difficulties with expressive/receptive language, articulation, fluency, social communication, or with eating, drinking, and swallowing. Speech therapy is provided by experts in communication called Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP).

Speech Therapy Skills

  • Expressive language involves expressing needs, wants, and thoughts and involves the things we say, write, sign, or communicate with a communication aid.
  • Receptive language involves your child’s comprehension and understanding of what people say and what they read.
  • Articulation is pronunciation of speech sounds. Speech sounds are the individual sounds in syllables and words we say using our lips, tongue, teeth, and vocal folds to increase overall speech intelligibility.
  • Fluency is the continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort in speech production.
  • Social communication includes social skills, such as turn taking, sharing, using eye contact, and understanding facial expressions. It involves the ability to use verbal and nonverbal social language for different purposes such as making requests, greeting others, having conversations with others.
  • Swallowing/Feeding includes difficulties with feeding such as only eating certain foods or taking a long time to eat, and swallowing (e.g., coughing during meal time).

Speaking Up

Through a combination of assessments, exercises, and targeted interventions, speech therapy helps individuals enhance their communication abilities, regain lost skills, and overcome challenges such as stuttering, voice disorders, or language delays.

High-Quality Speech Therapy

HL’s SLPs collect data on each client’s current goals every session in order to easily see and monitor progress throughout the lifespan of services. We let the client’s data tell us how to move forward or make changes to our treatment methods, which leads to high-quality services. Parents are able to monitor their child’s goals and progress along with the clinician in real-time.

Making Speech Therapy Fun!

We follow the child’s lead through play. This is done by playing with any toys they want or it may be using games and toys as a reinforcer while doing structured activities. Play is how children learn, enjoy, express themselves, and explore the world around them. By making therapy fun, engaging, and play-based, we are more likely to keep the child engaged, motivated, and help them develop and increase their skills.
