Hey there, parents! We know raising a child with autism comes with its own set of challenges, but let’s not forget about the amazing siblings in the mix! Siblings of autistic children are sometimes referred to “the forgotten ones” within autism communities.

These superhero sidekicks often juggle complex emotions and deserve some serious recognition.

Here’s how you can create a support system for your super sibling:

  • Understanding is Key: Talk openly and honestly about autism. Help your sibling understand their brother or sister’s unique way of seeing the world. There are tons of great children’s books about autism that can explain things in a fun and relatable way.
  • Feeling All the Feels: It’s okay for siblings to feel frustrated, embarrassed, or even left out sometimes. Create a safe space for them to express their emotions without judgment. Let them know you’re always there to listen.
  • Me Time Matters: Just like their sibling, your neurotypical child needs dedicated time for their own interests and friendships. Schedule one-on-one outings, special activities, or quiet cuddle time to show them they’re just as important.
  • Sibling Superpowers: Encourage your children to celebrate each other’s strengths. Maybe your neurotypical child is patient and understanding, while your autistic child excels at building amazing Lego creations! Help them see how their differences make them a fantastic team.
  • Support Squad Assemble!: Consider sibling support groups or online communities. Connecting with other kids who get it can be a huge weight off their shoulders.

Remember:

Being a sibling is a special role, and it can be even more special with a brother or sister on the autism spectrum. By providing support and understanding to siblings of autistic children, you can help your super sibling build a strong, long lasting bond with their awesome autistic sibling.
